Pet Sounds - 40th Anniversary Edition

Brian Wilson's response to the Beatles's Rubber Soul provided  Paul McCartney with the spur to create Sgt Pepper.

Forty years on it is presented  here in a two-disc CD/DVD package with four mixes - the original  mono, stereo, Hi-Res 96 kHz/24 bit PCM stereo, and Dolby digital 5.1 surround sound.

The surround sound version is  a revelation. As well as enhancing the richness of those peerless harmonies, it brings out previously buried elements of the instrumental backing tracks, which, in many cases, are far more intricate than the mono mix could convey - even following its creator's advice to

listen to the album on headphones in the dark.

One of the first pop or rock albums truly conceived as such rather than as a mixture of singles and filler material, it nevertheless includes three major hits - Wouldn't It Be Nice, Sloop John B and God Only Knows - and several other songs which are among Brian Wilson's very best: Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder), You Still Believe in Me, and Caroline No.

Forty years on the music still sounds as fresh and vital as it  must have done in 1966, and the arrangements still awe with their imaginative power.

As McCartney says in the excellent liner notes, 'No one is educated musically until they've heard Pet Sounds', and if you don't want to fork out the full cost of the 1997 Pet Sounds Sessions box set, which in any case doesn't have  the 5.1 mix, this is certainly the edition to own.

Video extras on the DVD include informative interviews with participants in the making of the album, and contributions from other luminaries including George Martin, Elvis Costello and Pete Townshend. Three primitive promotional shorts are also included.
