What is it? The Violight VIO200 Travel toothbrush sanitiser has been adapted from Violight's award-winning home version and promises germ-free brushing. The creators revised the original multi-brush, cup-shaped holder - designed by Philippe Starck - to make a slim, flat case accommodating a single toothbrush.

How does it work? The sanitiser uses UV light to eliminate 'up to 99.9 per cent of bacteria within a 10-minute timeframe', reads the spiel. After use, rinse the toothbrush and place it inside the container for automatic (and silent) sanitation. It uses two AA batteries, making it convenient when travelling to countries with different electrical voltages.

Why do I need one? Studies show that, even after careful rinsing, a toothbrush may still harbour millions of micro-organisms with the potential to cause health problems. There is also some evidence airborne bacteria launched from flushing toilets may infect uncovered toothbrushes. Add to this the likelihood of poor water quality when travelling to some countries and the need to store a damp toothbrush in a moisture-laden toiletry bag, and it is easy to see how bacteria can thrive. The American Dental Association recommends you keep your toothbrush covered when not in use and the Violight VIO200 is a convenient carrying case as well as a sanitiser.

Anything else? The travel case accommodates most toothbrushes, including electric versions. Extremely light at 85 grams and measuring 21.5cm by 5.7cm by 1.9cm, it is small and light enough to slip into hand luggage. The UV bulb lasts 1,000 hours and is replaceable. The removable drip tray should be rinsed regularly.

What's the downside? The Violight VIO200 sanitises but does not sterilise, although it will remove most of the bacteria known to cause health problems. It takes only one toothbrush at a time, meaning a family might find itself forming a queue to use it.

Where can I find it? The Violight Travel VIO200 toothbrush sanitiser costs US$29.85 from www.violight.com, which delivers to Hong Kong.
