Less than two hours' drive south of Los Angeles, this stretch of coastline sees even more sun than the city. And thanks to hit show The O.C. and MTV reality version Laguna Beach: The Real O.C., the world can watch while seemingly bikini-born locals sashay between shops pondering life's important questions, such as, 'Will my Fendi Spy bag be in stock?' Newport Beach offers a plethora of shopping delights, not least of which is the selection of European high fashion at A'Maree's (1649 Westcliff Drive, tel:1 949 642 4423). Owner Dawn Kloh has earned her front-row seat at the Paris and Milan catwalks, where she selects lotus-embroidered skirts from Dries van Noten (US$1,500) and Proenza Schoeler's ribbon-trim dresses (US$3,450) to hang alongside Balenciaga, Prada and the latest Bottega. Shoes here are equally noteworthy, with summer sandals from Jil Sander (US$540) and Christian Loubutin's stacked-to-the-sky espadrilles laced in silk (US$240). While it sounds idyllic, Newport's Fashion Island is more of a dud, filled with chain stores and silly souvenirs, the exception being Lululemon Athletica (927 Newport Center Drive, tel: 1 949 644 9642). Here men will find what they need to break a fashionable sweat but it is the women's thick, narrow-cut hoodies (US$78), available in every hue under the sun, that are keeping hot bodies warm after workouts. Matching crop tops (US$30) and a wide selection of flattering bottoms, from barely-there shorts (US$35) to ankle-length leggings (US$75), are all you need to join the store's free Sunday evening yoga classes on the beach. Continue south into Corona del Mar, where Erica Dee (above and right; 2919 East Coast Highway, tel: 1 949 673 9333) offers a rainbow of Havaianas flip-flops (US$18), Hanky Panky lacy G-strings (US$20), the latest zigzag striped Missoni halter dresses (US$622) and Sass & Bide embroidered silk tank tops (US$400). Next stop is Trio (7876 East Coast Highway, tel: 1 949 497 9003), where sublime Pacific Ocean views are enough to distract all but the most committed shoppers from fingering Jak & Rae cashmere sweaters (US$220), racks of plush Juicy Couture (a southern California staple) and Puella tunics (US$150). In Laguna Beach, even those without a star's salary can afford the budget-friendly bags inspired by the Fendi Spy (US$68) at Veronica M. (729 South Coast Highway, tel: 1 949 376 9519), while the shop's eponymous label does the same for flirty but affordable dresses (US$69). Across the street, at the adorably named Girl in the Curl (750 South Coast Highway, tel: 1 949 497 4475), Roxy bikinis (US$70) in psychedelic prints make everyone stand out in the surf. Pukka shells are crafted into festive Hawaiian leis (US$26) or more wearable necklaces (US$21), while the shop's mermaid-logo tanks (US$18) make chic souvenirs. The suntanned sales girls at Little Bohemian (210 Beach Street, tel: 1 949 497 8850) might have come straight off the Laguna Beach set but they could not be more helpful, carrying loads of Palm Springs-inspired print Trina Turk shorts (US$190) and dresses (US$275) and Free the People tube tops (US$38) into the tiny, painted dressing rooms. Finally, grab a pair of Dita sunglasses (from US$130), one of the few things on which Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton agree, and head across the street to relax on the real OC sand.
