Ray: The Animation (DVD) Ray: The Animation is an anime about a talented female surgeon who can see through solid objects. It is based on Yoshitomi Akihito's manga, Ray. The show was produced by Tezuka Productions, which has also created anime favourites like Astro Boy, the two recent Black Jack series, Jungle Emperor Leo and the animated movie Metropolis. Set in the not-too-distant future, Ray's horrifying childhood seems like something from the Middle Ages. She grew up in an illegal institution which raised children for the sole purpose of selling their organs on the black market. Ray's corneas were taken and she became blind. Luckily, she was rescued, given new corneas and able to see again. In the manga, the surgery was performed by a mysterious surgeon called BJ. In the anime, however, we learn that the doctor is actually the famous surgeon Black Jack, who is said to have the hands of a god. As the Black Jack animes were created by Tezuka Productions, the surgeon's appearance in this show was free from copyright issues. Once Ray's eyesight is restored, she discovers that she has also acquired X-ray vision. Grateful for what Black Jack did for her, Ray follows in his footsteps and becomes a surgeon. With her incredible surgical skills, and X-ray vision, Ray soon becomes a famous and popular doctor. She decides to try and use her profession and fame to find the people who ran the organisation where she grew up. This is an action-packed anime, with some very intense moments. Some scenes are even similar to TV series E.R. What makes Ray so compelling is the character development and the way Ray's history is gradually revealed throughout the series.
