Passers-by wrote their signatures on a huge red balloon in Mongkok yesterday in support of a minimum wage. The Confederation of Trade Unions placed the balloon next to the venue for a forum that was discussing the issue. Legislators 'Long Hair' Leung Kwok-hung, Margaret Ng Ngoi-yee, Leung Yiu-chung and Emily Lau Wai-hing spoke in support of a minimum wage. Confederation organising secretary Chan Chiu-wai said a rally would be held on October 2 to demand legislation on a minimum wage. Leung Kwok-hung led a rally organised by the April Fifth Action Group in the morning to demand speedy legislation. About 20 people marched to government headquarters, chanting slogans and voicing their opposition to the proposed goods and services tax (GST). They also brought along a duck woven from bamboo to criticise Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen for being heartless in trying to introduce a GST. They burned a petition letter before leaving. Leung Kwok-hung proposed the introduction of a progressive profits tax instead of a GST to protect the interests of the public.
