Everything Up Until Now and Including

With no music, no messages to decode and no fancy lighting,  this short, solo piece forces  your attention  on the dancer's physical movements.

Choreographed by  Mark Jarecke and performed by  Andrea Johnston (both New York-based artists),  Everything Up Until Now and Including is  intense.  If you lose your concentration for  even a second,   your connection with the performer  is lost - meaning the work is  almost as demanding and challenging for the dancer as it is for the audience.

Jarecke says in  a statement  that his choreography explores the expressivity of the  body's capability to move. 'I'm interested in moving beyond narrative forms and post- modern cleverness to intimately experience the dynamic possibilities of the human body.'

Instead of telling a story, Jarecke says, the logic of  each dance - often based on mathematical or architectural structures - creates its own structural cohesion. The audience is also encouraged  to find their own meaning.

It's easy to forget, after only a couple of minutes into the show, that this is  a choreographed piece  because it  looks improvised. Johnston has a solid  build and her powerful moves - kicks, stretches and twists of her limbs - switch  from being feather-light to lead heavy. The piece plays tricks:  just as you're expecting a leap, she  falls heavily on the ground; instead of turning right, she abruptly  turns left, instead of moving forward, she suddenly drops  backwards.

This is the kind of work most local artists  stay away from - for fear of having no audience. It audaciously explores not only  the dancer's physical limits,  but also the relationship  between  the choreographer and dancer.
