A welfare recipient was sentenced to nine years in jail yesterday for robbing and attempting to rob banks in Kwun Tong. Li Chor-ping, 33, pleaded guilty to two charges of robbery, in which he netted HK$18,500, and one of attempted robbery. The Court of First Instance heard that on January 3, Li threatened staff at a branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China with a fake bomb and stole HK$13,000. On February 16, he raided a Chiyu Bank branch and escaped with HK$5,500. He then tried to rob Wing Hang Bank on March 7, but was unsuccessful. He was arrested two days later. The court heard Li was convicted of blackmail in 1991 and of wounding last year. Deputy Judge Judianna Barnes Wai-ling noted that robbery was a serious offence. She added that although Li had used a fake bomb, he still shocked the public.
