The Liberal Party would do its best in December's Election Committee poll and would not co-ordinate a campaign strategy with the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, the Liberals' chairman said yesterday.
James Tien Pei-chun said despite good relations between the two parties, there would be no need for negotiations as there would be no overlapping on election targets. 'The Liberal Party will do its best in fighting for seats in the Election Committee. We are not afraid that our efforts would affect the DAB's chances.'
He said following DAB concern that it could be difficult for it to defend its 107 seats, the Liberals had reviewed their strategy and found that the sectors they planned to contest did not overlap with DAB strongholds such as the import and export, and agricultural and fisheries sectors.
At present, most of the Liberals' 90-plus seats are either business-related or in professional sectors. The party would not contest seats in DAB strongholds so there was no need for co-ordination or negotiations, Mr Tien said. But in sectors, such as accounting, where both parties are looking to expand their influence, he said vacancies would be up for grabs.
