You've just spent a week giving master classes on 'the fundamentals of physical theatre and authentic voice'. What techniques were people most interested in?
British actor David Glass:
'My students wanted to know what physical theatre is - some fundamental and basic rules. They also wanted to know how they could improve their skills. Some are from repertory theatre and they're looking for something refreshing. I wanted them to become more expressive with their body, looking into their body and feelings, trying to sense what they feel. Also I wanted them to understand the discipline in technique - they have to work out and practise everyday.'
What are local performers particularly good (and bad) at?
'They're good at focusing and are hungry for ideas. They like discipline, and they look for vocabularies in practical ways. But they may be weak in initiative. When I asked for traditional Chinese songs, they could only give me Canto-pop. They may need to study their own culture more. Sometimes, I think they're working more on the outside, not the inside.'
What have you been up to lately (other than travelling the world giving master classes)?
