Why you can trust SCMP

If you've ever wondered how glass artists manage to produce their intricate and fragile works in such a fiery environment, here is your chance to experience it first-hand. Glass artist Wong Kwok-chung and his Kaleidoscope Studio have begun glass-blowing workshops, which, he says, are the first of their kind in Hong Kong. At the 3,500 sq ft space, you learn how to melt glass in a furnace and dip a blowpipe into the substance before blowing, shaping and colouring the glass. Upon completion of the workshop, participants should have made between six and eight pieces, such as paperweights, bowls and bottles.

There are two levels of the workshop: 'introduction' and 'experience'. Both are for entry-level students, but with different durations and prices. The introductory workshop takes two days and one evening, and costs HK$2,500, which covers raw materials, tools, furnaces and gas. The experience workshop takes one day and costs HK$1,200.

Kaleidoscope Studio is at 3C, Chen Yip Building, 5 Lai Yip Street, Kwun Tong, tel: 2728 4224; homepage.mac.com/kaleidoscopestudio (in Chinese only).
