Alleged hit-and-run taxi driver out on bail

A taxi driver arrested for speeding off after his vehicle allegedly hit and killed a 73-year-old woman in Sheung Shui last Thursday was released on HK$8,000 bail yesterday. The man, 56, is required to report back to police on October 24. Police arrested him on Monday as he tried to fix his cab's dented bonnet at his Fairview Park house in Yuen Long. He has not been charged.

19 injured in separate pile-ups in Kwai chung

Nineteen people were slightly injured in two separate accidents in Kwai Chung. At 7.25pm on Cheung Tsing Highway, two drivers and two passengers were hurt in a six-vehicle pile-up involving three light goods vans, two cars and one taxi. The second accident, which occurred four minutes later on Kwai Fong Road, involved two minibuses, one taxi and a car. Nineteen people were treated at Yan Chai and Princess Margaret hospitals. All are in a stable condition.

Illegal immigrants held over stolen items in hut

Police arrested three mainland illegal immigrants and recovered about 40 stolen items, including watches, mobile phones and cameras, during a raid on a hut in Tin Sam Tsuen, Tin Ha Road, Tin Shui Wai. The trio are linked to at least two burglaries on Sunday and Monday in which HK$23,000 worth of property was stolen. No charges have been laid.
