Down with discrimination

Although Hong Kong is a progressive society, I think that discrimination still exists.

I find that, at my school, boys are often discriminated against.

For example, our class was asked to do some extra homework, even though we are doing our A-Levels and should be studying.

Some of the students didn't complete it on time. The girls who failed to do it were let off, but the boys who didn't hand it in were punished.

I worry that this is happening all over Hong Kong. It's time we woke up to discrimination.

Colour your world

Colour plays an important part in our lives.

It makes things more interesting and more attractive. To live without colour would be depressing and boring.

What's more, colour can affect our mood.

If we are depressed, looking at something red or pink can cheer us up. If we feel stressed, looking at something blue or green can make us calmer.

Colour also helps us to distinguish things. If colour didn't exist, everything would look the same.

Colour stops our lives being monotonous.

HK comedy star

Stephen Chow Sing-chi is one of Hong Kong's most successful comedy actors.

He started his acting career on TVB, but it wasn't until he got a part in Jeff Lau's film All For The Winner that he was really recognised as a comedy genius.

By 1994, he started to write and direct films himself.

His films are often based on a similar character: either an under-achiever who beats the odds or an arrogant overachiever who is humbled and learns a lesson.

His recent films have focused more on comedic action and special effects.

This focus led to his two most recent movies, Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, gaining popularity and success all over the world.

Make time for breakfast

If you want to start the day on a positive note, you should eat breakfast.

It provides us with important nutrients, and gives us the energy to face the day.

Many girls think that skipping breakfast will help them lose weight.

But if you eat a proper breakfast, you are less likely to snack later in the day. Eating breakfast can actually prevent weight gain.

People who eat breakfast are usually more productive and can concentrate better at school.

Their brains function better  than those who skip breakfast, and their problem-solving ability is higher too.

Making breakfast doesn't take a long time.

You can have a bowl of cereal, baked beans on toast or a waffle with canned fruit and yoghurt.

So stop making excuses. Having breakfast will make you healthier and happier.

Problem teenagers, irresponsible parents

A gang of youngsters went on a robbery spree in March. They mostly targeted students in popular shopping areas in Mong Kok.

At their trial, the judge sentenced four of the teenagers to an indefinite term at a youth training centre.

Of the four defendants, only one of them was 18 years old. The rest of them were children.

All of them were convicted of five counts of robbery.

The judge blamed the defendants' parents for not disciplining their children.

In many cases like this, the reason youngsters misbehave is to attract their parents' attention.

I believe that parents should think of ways to spend more time with their children, so that the children do not get into trouble.

My favourite game

I started watching basketball on TV when I was eight years old.

I was especially interested in the US teams because of the NBA superstars, such as Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant.

They are very skilful players and often lead their team to win the game.

I started to play basketball when I was twelve. At first, I was not very good at all. But I  practised a lot and got stronger.

Scoring points makes me feel confident, and I love working in a team. I think I will play basketball until I am old.

Agatha Christie rocks

I have just finished reading a novel called Curtain by Agatha Christie. It was excellent.

I was really impressed by her writing technique. I had no idea who the murderer was until the last chapter.

Her novels keep me totally in suspense.

Christie wrote over 80 novels. Many of them have been adapted for TV, film and theatre.

Some of the most well-known characters on TV are based on her books, such as the detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.

Christie's novels are masterpieces which are well worth reading.

She uses simple English, so you don't need to flip through a dictionary as you read them.

You will be tempted to read from the first page to the end without stopping. Her stories are wonderful.

Creative exam

I am writing in response to the letter 'More creative exam system needed' (Young Post, August 26).

I totally agree with the writer's opinion that Hong Kong students only focus on exams.

Hong Kong students face many different exams throughout their school lives.

For example, Form Five students take the HKCEE to determine whether they can get a place in Form Six place.

Form Seven students need to take the HKAL to determine whether they can get  into university.

Even Primary Six students need to sit an exam which determines whether they can get into their chosen secondary school.

As the outcome of each exam is so important, students are under a lot of pressure throughout their time at school.

They do not spend enough time relaxing or enjoying themselves.

Being under constant pressure and not taking any time to just enjoy life may cause some students to develop serious mental problems.

What's more, the Hong Kong education system changes frequently. This creates more stress for both the students and teachers. It can be very difficult and stressful for them to understand the new exam syllabus.

A more creative exam system is needed to reduce the stress of Hong Kong students.

That way, students can combine hard work with relaxation, and stop worrying all the time.
