The leader of the mass campaign to oust Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian vowed yesterday not to yield to pressure after Mr Chen's followers threatened violence if the campaign moved south.

'If you think Mr Chen is innocent, you can speak your opinion rather than use your shoulder pole. I am not scared,' Taiwan's Central News Agency quoted former Democratic Progressive Party chairman Shih Ming-teh as saying.

'I have faced guns many times, not to mention shoulder poles,' he said, referring to the poles used in rural areas to carry water.

The anti-Chen rally moved from the square outside the Presidential Office in Taipei last night, with organisers saying they would continue the campaign 'with grace'.

The headquarters of the 'Million Voices Against Corruption' campaign, which organised the mass protest in Taipei, had vowed to continue the sit-in at the square even when permission to occupy the venue expired.

But Mr Shih changed his mind yesterday, saying they would 'give in with grace' to co-operate with police.

'It's expensive to move around, but considering the pressure on the Taipei mayor and the police, we decided to move to Taipei station to continue the campaign.'
