HK$1,800 will buy Mickey and Minnie fans unlimited access

Hong Kong Disneyland has launched an unlimited HK$1,800 premium yearly pass as it seeks to increase its share of leisure dollars.

The pass costs  5.14 times the regular adult admission price of HK$350 and can be used every day.

The same premium pass costs  US$559 at Walt Disney World in Florida, 8.34 times the one-day admission price, and US$359 at Disneyland in California, 5.7 times the one-day ticket. Annual passes at the theme parks in Tokyo and Paris are priced at 7.75 times and 4.16 times, respectively.

The  anticipated programme comes as the theme park concluded a successful summer pass offer yesterday, selling more than 70,000 of the HK$450 seasonal passes in just three months.

An 'After 4' ticket is also available, but only to participants of Convention and Exhibition Centre trade shows. The ticket offers a HK$100 discount on regular admission and has been sold since March.

'We've been very successful with our summer pass so we're optimistic with the annual pass,' Josh D'Amaro,  the theme park's vice-president of sales and travel trade marketing, said.

Only 5,000 of the premium annual passes, which have no block-out dates and full parking and hotel privileges, will be offered.

They cost HK$1,800 for adults, HK$1,250 for children and HK$1,000 for seniors.

A deluxe pass, priced between HK$740 and HK$1,300, and a value pass, costing between HK$370 and HK$650, cannot be used during certain peak periods and holidays and have no quotas.

Mr D'Amaro declined to say how many annual passes were expected to be sold in its first year.

The annual passes go on sale today at 8am.

'The summer pass cost HK$450 and was valid for about three months. If you stretch that out to a year, you get HK$1,800. That's probably how they arrived at that price,' Ocean Park chief executive Tom Mehrmann  said.

He welcomed the annual pass programme, which he said would largely appeal to locals and visitors from over  the border.

Ocean Park offers an annual gold pass for HK$550, almost three times its adult admission price of HK$185.

Mainlander Zhang Min, who bought a summer pass and made her second visit to the Disney park yesterday, said she would consider buying the  annual value pass but  the deluxe and premium passes were too expensive.

Polytechnic University tourism associate professor John Ap agreed the three-tier pricing strategy offered  flexibility to cater to different budgets. But he warned  an annual pass programme that was too successful could affect the bottom line.

Michael Wu Siu-ieng, an executive committee member of the Association of Travel Agents, said a transfer service would be offered to tourists with annual passes that offered one-way transport from their hotel to the theme park for between HK$70 and HK$100.
