A group campaigning for increased democracy in Hong Kong has decided not to support the Democratic Party and its allies in nominating a candidate for the chief executive election next year.
The Frontier's convenor, Emily Lau Wai-hing, said: 'I will not nominate any candidate to run, as it is a 'small-circle election', which The Frontier decided not to support and participate in.'
Ms Lau as a legislative councillor will automatically be a member of the 800-member Election Committee responsible for selecting a new chief in March.
She nominated Lee Wing-tat, the chairman of the Democratic Party, to run against former chief secretary Donald Tsang Yam-kuen in the chief executive election in March last year. Mr Lee failed to run because he did not gain the 100 nominations required.
Ms Lau said she and The Frontier had supported the Democratic Party's candidate last year because they wanted to highlight the unfairness and faultiness of the 'small-circle election' through participation.
'But I don't think we can achieve the goal,' she said, adding that she would not support any allies' candidates running in the election.
