You appear in all your paintings in Figure Figures, yet you say they're not self-portraits. What's the idea behind the exhibition?

London-based Hong Kong artist Joe Joe H.L. Ngai:

'For me, it doesn't matter who that figure is. A self-portrait suggests it's a representation of the artist or a reflection of his or her character. My images are devoid of that. They're no more than dummies for dressing up. So attention should be paid to what's on or surrounding the figure than the figure itself.

'In these pieces, there's no real connection between the figure and the clothing. They sit awkwardly, yet comfortably, on a single-layer surface. This may create an image or character the viewer can recognise or relate to. These characters can be people you meet in everyday life or figments of your imagination.

'It's often said that truth lies below the surface. We look for deep, meaningful messages and often forget that what's on the surface can sometimes hold as much truth as what lies beneath. This series of portraits is a whimsical reminder of how the surface can often be under-valued and misunderstood.'
