Smuggler killed in boat chase

A CHINESE smuggler died and his partner was taken to hospital after they jumped overboard during a high-speed boat chase.

The man who died jumped from a speedboat travelling at more than 90 km/h while being chased by two pursuit craft launched from HMS Starling.

The other man became entangled in fishing nets after hurling himself into the sea when the boat was boarded.

A launch from Sai Kung police station transferred them to the United Christian Hospital.

One was taken to intensive care but died at 7 am yesterday from multiple injuries. The other is believed to have a broken leg.

On board were 40 Hitachi karaoke television sets believed to have been destined for the mainland.
