The Civic Party last night presented barrister-lawmaker Alan Leong Kah-kit as a would-be challenger to Donald Tsang Yam-kuen in the chief executive election and vowed to stage an all-out effort to get him onto the official campaign trail.

Mr Leong's nomination by the party's executive committee came after former chief secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang announced she would not join the fray for a 'meaningless' race a week ago.

The party is set to endorse his candidacy on November 4, two days before a meeting with the Democratic Party and allies to endorse a cross-party candidate.

Under the electoral system, the chief executive will be returned by votes from an 800-strong Election Committee comprising members of various professional and social sectors.

Mr Tsang is expected to be returned with a clear majority, although his prospects of facing a contestant are still in question. The hurdle for any candidate to join the chief executive race is securing 100 nominations from the committee.
