Saturday, midnight, Dragon-i

DJs usually get the limelight, and their vocalists get short shrift. House music singer Michelle Weeks plans to set that to rights at Dragon-i this Saturday night.

'We're not beneath DJs,' she says. 'If anything, we should share the spotlight. But the truth is we give a lot more of ourselves and our creative ability when we as artists perform. It's a real show - for some of us anyway.'

You may not recognise her name, but if you've stepped onto a dance floor any time since the late 1990s, you would probably recognise her voice. She has provided vocals for hits such as The Light, Be Thankful, Gotta Keep Tryin' and Don't Give Up, and entertained crowds in what Weeks calls an early-morning 'music ministry'.

'The Bible says to take the Gospel to all the world. Is a club not a part of the world? Many people in clubs don't go to churches, and my ministry is to reach those in other places.'

A nightclub on a Saturday night may seem an odd place for preaching the gospel, but Weeks easily connects entertainment and evangelism. She says her personal calling as an artist is 'to help heal people through song, to help lift peoples' spirits and to bring them joy in times of sorrow. I want to make a difference in the lives of people.'
