We know that the new government complex will soon be built at Tamar, apparently with a moat around it to keep out the people. So how about creating a new open space on the Central waterfront that the people of Hong Kong can actually use?
The large plot of land presently taken up by the military barracks is underutilised. There is a half-empty (and ugly) accommodation block now housing a small detachment of People's Liberation Army soldiers. Since they are not allowed out of barracks, there is no need for them to be stationed on such a prime Central site.
This large plot of waterfront land includes extensive recreational facilities, such as swimming pools and tennis courts, which never seem to have anybody using them. Why not demolish this high-walled and almost empty eyesore and create an open space there like the attractive waterfront public recreational area at Taikoo Shing?
That lovely public resource includes a popular walking or jogging track, a harbourside lookout pavilion, tennis and basketball courts, as well as other popular amenities.
With a bit of imagination, this important site in Central could be redeveloped to provide thousands of Central office workers with a pleasant place to go at lunchtime.
