The demand for professional valuers is growing following the recent enforcement in Hong Kong of new international accounting standards. In particular, valuers are now needed to carry out purchase price allocation exercises on acquisitions, according to Gavin Geminder, head of corporate finance at KPMG China and Hong Kong.

Under the new accounting standards in Hong Kong, in place since the end of last year, all acquisitions now need to conform, which can sometimes be a tricky as well as a technical exercise to enforce.

Due to rapid business growth and a new, strong demand for valuation products, KPMG is hiring valuation managers. The positions entail undertaking business valuations and purchase price allocation assignments for both international and Hong Kong companies.

Day-to-day duties include the management of junior team members and assisting the senior managers with business development.

Mr Geminder feels that the need to multi-task and to demonstrate both technical and business skills can be a challenge. Therefore, the ideal candidate is someone who is mathematically confident with excellent interpersonal skills, and who is resilient and robust in challenging situations. Presentation skills are also essential as is the ability to communicate to different audiences.

'Highlights of the job are working within a dynamic team with huge growth budgets and long-term career prospects,' Mr Geminder said.

He said the firm has been operating for more than 60 years in Hong Kong and 20 years on the mainland.
