City University engineering student Victor Lai Wing-tai, 22, is out of focus. At least to you he is. But looking at himself through specially-tinted glasses he is pin sharp in three dimensions, videoed by fellow student Ryan Cheung Wing-cheung, 23. The pair were showing off their invention this week at a demonstration of projects produced as part of CityU's 'synergistic innovation scheme'. The 3D project was one of five, including web-building software, an e-mail filtering programme, a GPS bus tracking project and radio frequency-led rescue system, that had made it to the second year of the industry-sponsored three-year scheme. Groups taking part are awarded HK$5,000 in the first year, HK$50,000 in the second and HK$100,000 in the third to complete their projects aimed at 'benefiting the community'. Mr Lai, Mr Cheung and the two other students in their team hope to develop the 3D project for consumer home video use.
