What's so special about it? The Riverside Hotel is a small, luxurious hotel housed in an art-nouveau building offering fairytale views of Prague's towers and turrets. Where is it? Situated on the western bank of the Vltava River, the hotel is within walking distance of Prague's historic centre (a Unesco World Heritage site), the National Theatre and Charles Bridge. The Vltava River divides Prague into two: the eastern bank, where the Old Town is located, and the western bank, where Prague Castle stands. How intimate is it? There are 45 rooms in total - 13 junior suites, 13 deluxe rooms and 19 standard rooms. All are comfortable and stylish, with the modern conveniences you would expect of a luxury hotel, such as individually controlled air-conditioners and high-speed internet access. But what makes it stand out are the special touches, such as lampshades decorated with delicate chains of Prague glass beads and green-and-white candy-striped ceilings to match the walls and curtains. All rooms have beautifully polished hardwood floors and plenty of natural light. Beds are piled high with pillows and bathrooms are equipped with fluffy, full-length robes. Junior suites have separate living areas and provide views across the river to the National Theatre. What's the ambience like? Romantic. The hotel's handsome facade houses a smart, belle epoque interior. Several French architects, among them Pascal de Montremy, designed the decor. The red walls in the hallways and public spaces are reminiscent of old Russia. There is a small reception area manned by friendly and helpful staff. Most, from the bellboys to the turndown lady who dispenses extra chocolates, are happy to offer advice to visitors wishing to explore their city. Anything else we should know? The Hemingway Bar serves cocktails, coffees, other drinks and light meals in a theatrical, red and black setting. Although 24-hour room service is available, the concierge service provides faultless recommendations for restaurants around the area and is only too happy to make bookings for guests. The tram stop across the bridge from the hotel is particularly useful if the weather is wet or you've had enough of walking. One of the city's biggest malls, Prague 5 Andel, is also nearby. What's the bottom line? Room rates start at Euro175 (HK$1,730) a person per night.
