Our testers had some radically different reactions to the new perfumes and aftershaves hitting Hong Kong shops this autumn:

Miller Harris (HK$970/100ml): Dubbed a timeless, exquisite fragrance for day or evening.

Kay Drew: 'This is very masculine and woody at first.  My husband would wear it. It  gets a bit calmer after a while  and turns pungently lemon-like. Clean, fresh and day time only.'

Sarah Woodrow: 'This smells like baby powder and old ladies. Although it's a familiar sort  of smell and reminds me of childhood, I wouldn't buy it.'

Karmen Yu:  'I don't like this at all. Sweet and fruity. It's horrid'

Edwin Li: 'Subtle, floral with  a hint of musk. It's a young woman's perfume.'

Be (HK$670/51ml), the new scent from  Becker Eshaya, is  touted as sophisticated yet fresh.

Drew: 'Floral, exotic.  I quite like it,  but for evenings only, because it's heavy.'

Woodrow: 'Fresh, minty, bubblegum. My mum would wear this.  It's a daytime perfume only.'

Yu: 'I love this one. It's flowery and minty at the same time. How much is it? I want it!'

Li: 'Mumsy. It smells like air freshener. It's coarse and unsophisticated. For an older woman only.'

Bond  No 9 (HK$1,870/100ml)

Drew: 'Overbearing and a bit sickly. It's not a daytime  one. It's an old lady perfume.'

Woodrow: 'Oh no, this is horrid. It smells like pot-pourri.'

Yu: 'It's OK, but I still don't  really like it. It's quite a fruity  and young smell.'

Li: 'I don't like this, it's  very ordinary'

Clive Christian, the brand  that produces some of the most expensive perfumes in the  world, has launched three  new aftershaves:

X for Men (HK$2,613/1.6oz)

Drew: 'This smells like Christmas and incense in church. It's  nice  for a candle burner.'

Woodrow: 'Very musky and  sexy. My husband would like this. Reminds me of coffee and mints and chocolate.'

Yu: 'Peppermint and talcum powder. This is an old  lady's smell.'

Li: 'I like it. Masculine. Spicy.  A very straightforward smell.'

Christian's  No 1 (HK$5,733/1.6oz)

Drew: 'Not a particularly masculine smell. It's more like a woman's perfume and it sticks to the back of the throat.'

Woodrow: 'Too girly for me.  Very floral.'

Yu: 'Too sweet for a man. It's like a lady's perfume.'

Li: 'Reminds me of the Mediterranean. A young man's smell. Not very masculine, but I like it. I'd wear it.'

1872 (HK$2,223/1.6oz)

Drew:  'Citrus undertones with a soft finish. I'd buy it. Clean, crisp day-to-nighttime smell.'

Woodrow: 'Pine trees and Christmas. It reminds me of  my dad.'

Yu: 'I like it, even though it's  for an older man. Maybe a fashionable  fortysomething.'

Li: 'Old school. Masculine with  a subtle edge. I like it.
