With our riff-raff reputation, we were naturally excluded from the Mandarin Oriental hotel's super exclusive black-tie grand opening gala dinner on Tuesday night. More than the usual socialite suspects attended, though. The posh party invited some big-name out-of-towners, including Vanessa Mae, Vivienne Tam and architect extraordinaire I.M. Pei. Basically, it was a reunion of the poster children from the ad campaign. However, the biggest surprises were the entertainers. Dame Edna (Barry Humphries) worked the crowd and even added some jokes about local society. Dame Edna, in a sequinned purple gown, pointed to outlandish dresser Brenda Chau and quipped: 'She is going to get this copied in all colours of the rainbow.' The 800-plus revellers really went into a frenzy when the dashing presence of Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry (left) appeared for a mini-concert in the lobby and the women swooned as he performed Slave To Love.
