Updated at 2.15pm: The parents of a 10-year-old boy who died of suffocation after being locked in a suitcase were sentenced to jail on Wednesday. The High Court had found Chu Wing-hon, 50, and his 34-year-old Japanese wife, Koyo Takahashi, guilty of manslaughter in the death of their son Chu Tai-fuk. On Wednesday, Chu Wing-hon was jailed for 18 months and Takahashi was jailed for two years. The court heard that the pair locked their son in a suitcase in their Wan Chai home for almost two hours on February 16. They did so to discipline him for returning late from school and refusing to do his homework. When Takahashi opened the suitcase, she found Tai-fuk unconscious with vomit on his T-shirt. The boy was rushed to hospital but declared dead two days later. He died of multiple organ failure from ?environmental suffocation?. In sentencing the couple, Deputy-High Court Judge Peter Line described the incident as a tragedy. Mr Justice Line said the female defendant was given a longer term than her husband because she showed a greater degree of culpability. The judge was satisfied that Takahashi could have opened the suitcase earlier than she actually did, while her husband was out from home at the time. He also said that on the surface the jail terms were not severe but the real punishment was the anguish that would last for the rest of their lives.
