To celebrate the anniversaries of two Chinese University of Hong Kong colleges - Chung Chi's  55th and United's  50th - an  exhibition  is being held of contemporary woodblocks, showcasing works by   printmaker Mui Chong-ki and  artist Lee Hon-ching, among others.

The two artists also helped put the show together. 'It may be unexpected to hold an art exhibition to celebrate the anniversaries of two colleges, each without an art department,' says Lee. 'But these two colleges  respect and celebrate the arts   and encourage these qualities in their students as well.'

The works  are diverse in style, illustrating the wide range of woodblock-printing techniques used  by mostly young mainland artists, including Chen Xuhai from Wenzhou and Wang Chao from Hangzhou.

'The spirit and power of art is  also shown in the works,  which were chosen, in part, to exemplify the quality of integration: the traditional Chinese techniques and images with the methods and expression adopted and adapted from the west and the world,' says Lee, who is now based in Seattle.

Mui  received his art education at the Guangzhou Academy of Art.  He has taken part in regional and international exhibitions, and has held  solo  shows in Hong Kong, on the mainland, in other parts of Asia and the US. His works are collected by museums  around the world.

This show juxtaposes traditional  and contemporary Chinese woodblock-printing methods, and is a brief introduction to the talents in this art form on the mainland today.
