The Hospital Authority yesterday said the resignation of a top liver transplant surgeon would not affect its services.
Dubbed the city's 'father of liver transplants' by the medical sector, Fan Sheung-tat, 54, was chief of liver transplants and surgery on the pancreas, bile ducts, and gallbladder at the University of Hong Kong.
Dr Fan is also the most experienced among the three liver transplant surgeons who can conduct the operation independently in the city's only liver transplant centre at the university's teaching hospital, the Queen Mary.
He is the second surgeon to have resigned from the team in just over a year.
Well-respected surgeon Liu Chi-leung left in September last year and has a private practice.
Dr Fan said he was determined to leave because he was dissatisfied with the increasing workload in research and teaching. He will leave in March.
