Mainland universities have been ranked higher than Hong Kong universities in the fields of science and technology in The Times Higher World University Rankings 2006. In the technology rankings, Tsinghua University was 14th, with Hong Kong University of Science and Technology 17th and Peking University 20th. University of Hong Kong came 67th, Chinese University was 72nd and City University 85th. In the science rankings, Peking was 12th, China University of Science and Technology 32nd, Tsinghua 41st and Fudan University 63rd. HKUST was 69th in the world's top 100 science universities, followed by HKU at 71st. A HKUST spokesman said the university was pleased with its rankings but said the results were 'no grounds for complacency but a spur to reach for even greater heights'. Universities from the US and Britain made up most of the top 10. Massachusetts Institute of Technology was the top technology university, while Cambridge University took the top science ranking.
