Cheung Kong Infrastructure Business Award ; Medic Vision
THE CHEUNG KONG Infrastructure Business Innovation Award went to Medic Vision, a supplier of simulation devices and consulting services to the medical and surgical teaching profession. Its aims are to implement technology to improve skills to reduce medical errors and improve patient safety.
'We offer a realistic environment to practise all types of surgical skills,' general manager for Asia-Pacific Billy Chan said. 'You can carry out all types of mock-up procedures to practise all types of skills. It is similar to the way pilots are trained but there is no risk for patients.'
Because of the nature of computer simulation the environment can be controlled according to the needs of the task required. Trainees can repeat tasks until they get them right. Training using this method takes less time than conventional methods.
'Because the environment is controlled [students] can perfect their skills in less time than it would usually take. It requires fewer procedures for them to reach competency.'
Founded in 2000, Medic Vision is a technology-based company dedicated to bringing virtual reality training applications to develop surgical and medical skills in the medical training profession. The company offers consulting services to develop skills training centres and develop and deploy computer-based surgical and medical simulators. It was acquired by publicly listed Premier Bionics in the middle of last year.
