Next month the Mission Hills group rolls out the first of its new signature spa brand. Not content to be known as the biggest golf club in the world, the group hopes the new spa concept will earn it a reputation as a premium lifestyle destination spa.

Three spas were scheduled to open in the coming months and they were only the beginning of the group's ambitious plans to become 'one of the leading spa destinations, offering the best of leisure and wellness products', said group vice-chairman Ken Chu.

To date, US$15 million has been invested in the spa development (excluding land costs). As one might expect from the largest golf club in the world, size clearly matters. The development sprawls across 20,000 square metres over club land and the National Park Reserve in Dongguan, Guangdong province.

The spas are customised according to their location within the so-called community, and each will target a different audience, from those wanting a quick or basic treatment such as a facial to clients who want to dedicate hours, even days, to spa therapies.

About 650 therapists will be on hand, and the group is building its own on-site spa academy to train them. The size of the project meant that guests would have plenty of space and quiet, the group said.

Mission Hills is going for a tropical Asian spa experience, with a lifestyle theme based on wellness and relaxation.

Peggy Liong, general manager, Mission Hills spa, said the spa movement was going back to its origins with facilities such as haman baths, crystal steam rooms and the like. Treatments would be based on eastern and western healing philosophies and water and hydrotherapy therapies.
