Six-year-old twins Chung King-fung, right, and Chung King-hung put the finishing touches to their vision of life under the sea, with a little help from student helpers from YCH Wong Wha San Secondary School in Tseung Kwan O.
The twins were among 25 autistic children who took part in an art class put on by the school's Chinese painting and calligraphy, and Caring Angels clubs last Saturday.
Chinese teacher Lui Kwok-wai said the event was intended to let the autistic children express themselves through art. He added that he also hoped to broaden the secondary students' perspectives by instilling in them the value of both art and caring.
'Students who care a lot about others tend not to know much about art, and the students who care about art tend not to know about caring for others,' Mr Lui said. 'Bringing these two clubs together for this event has given the students a chance to learn from each other's strengths.'
For many of the secondary students, it was their first contact with autistic children.
'I found it quite difficult to communicate to begin with as my girl didn't speak much,' said 18-year-old Form Five student, Kee Yee-nam. 'She didn't always respond to my questions right away, but I would repeat myself and give her praise and that seemed to help.
