Planning Department wants to develop the area in southeastern Lantau into a historic rural township with leisure facilities
A major makeover to increase the commercial value of Mui Wo on southeastern Lantau will be launched to attract more investment from private developers.
In a bid to catch up with rapid tourism development to the island's north, the Planning Department last week released a plan to transform the area into a historic rural township complete with leisure facilities.
The concept consists of three phases focusing on the area near the ferry pier, the old town and southern Mui Wo.
To enhance its appeal to tourists, the bicycle parking area opposite the ferry pier and part of the bus terminus will be converted into an entrance plaza with shops and restaurants.
Also included is a multi-purpose venue in Mui Wo Town Square that will house a flea market, outdoor dining, live performances or local events, as well as shops.
