RETIN A

A common treatment for acne and sun-damaged skin, Retin A has long been prescribed by dermatologists, so it was only a matter of time before cosmetics companies got in on the game. Retin A is a brand of topical vitamin A called tretinoin. Tretinoin is commonly used to treat acne because it reduces congestion in pores. Anti-ageing campaigners also champion the substance. 'I use tretinoin cream on a regular basis for its anti-ageing effects and I recommend it to a lot of my patients,' says dermatology specialist Tinny Ho. Retin A encourages collagen production and growth of healthy epidermal cells and decreases abnormal pigmentation.' The result is a reduction in fine lines and a more even complexion. A prescription is necessary and advisable (side effects may include itchiness and peeling). Dr Ho starts her patients on a low dosage to build the skin's tolerance to tretinoin. 'It should be used at night and unprotected sun exposure should be avoided.'
