Jacques Guillemet and Sophie Roberty, of French homeware brand Pylones, known for its fun and colourful designs, were in town recently for the opening of lifestyle store Carsac in Tsim Sha Tsui, which sells their products. Q: What's the reason behind the colourful style? Guillemet: 'Design today is usually minimalist, metallic and in black, grey or red. Such things are more for people who know about design. We want to be accessible to everybody and create designs that touch everyone.' Q: Your products are cute. Are you targeting children? Guillemet: 'Actually they're mainly for adults. People need colour. But, I guess, inside we're still very young. Our products try to remind people how they loved colour and fun when they were younger.' Q: Is it fun to create witty designs? Roberty: 'I love what I do because everybody, including children, can access the designs. It's like [the cartoon character] Tintin. Every-one can relate to Tintin. But occasionally we have flops. For example, we designed this incense holder of a cow's head - the smoke came out from its nose. It was a flop - maybe it didn't make people laugh because they couldn't associate incense with fun.' Q: Where do you find inspiration for your designs? Roberty: 'From life. I have a special way of thinking. It's like a pinball game. My ideas are always changing but they always come back later. Creating an idea is not like cooking. When you cook a dish, you always use the same ingredients. [Designing] isn't like that. The ingredients and method you use are never the same.'
