Couture menswear guru Francesco Smalto (right) was in town at the weekend to launch his service and meet long-time clients over cocktails at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental. In tailoring circles, the Frenchman is a renowned figure, hand-making the suits of 21 different countries' presidents as well as other famous figures from Zinedine Zidane to the Shah of Iran since 1962. These days his perfection demands each suit takes about two months to complete. 'I started tailoring when I was 10, using a puppet, but it was another 25 years before I made my first suit,' Smalto said. 'I have only about 10 VIP clients from Hong Kong right now, but each time they come to me in Paris they might buy about 10 suits or more at a time.' The cost? If you choose his exclusive fabrics, like pashmina and vicuna hair interwoven with either gold or diamonds (yes, diamonds), it could be as high as HK$150,000 a suit.
