AS we move closer to what bodes to be a century of Asian world leadership in the on-going hi-tech space age, it is especially nice to see those beautiful traditions being kept, which help to keep society congenial and pleasant.

The burning of fires to honour the memory of one's ancestors is one of these customs which promotes respect for our families.

However Hong Kong high rise apartment buildings all seem to have a defect in regard to a ventilation system that cannot properly deal with the smoke created by tenants making fires in the stairwells.

All the smoke from fires rises quickly to the topmost floor, where, since it cannot continue upwards, it enters the top floor hallway by seeping under and around the fire stairwell fire-door.

All the smoke eventually slowly seeps under the door of the flats which have the misfortune of providing an air current which draws in the smoke.

As Yuen-fen (destiny) would have it I live on a top floor in Heng Fa Chuen and work on a top floor in Taikoo Shing. As luck would have it, I also have a respiratory problem.
