More than one in two shoppers refused bags on the five previous No Plastic Bag Days, a green group survey showed.

The monthly survey, conducted by the Green Student Council, interviewed 1,000 people on each No Plastic Bag Day over the past five months.

It found that an average 51.2 per cent of respondents said they did not use plastic bags that day. About six out of 10 people said they knew No Plastic Bag Day fell on the first Tuesday of every month.

Up to 70 per cent of people said they were trying to get into the habit of not using plastic bags. On No Plastic Bag Days, the number of bags distributed falls by about 40 per cent compared with ordinary days, the survey showed.

Council chairman Angus Ho Hon-wai said the group was satisfied with the results. 'We can see that more and more people have become aware of our campaign and many have already got used to taking their own bags,' he said.
