Lenovo earnings drop 15.6pc on IBM setbacks
PC maker struggles to turn around international business
Lenovo Group, China's top personal computer maker and the world's third-largest, reported a worse than expected 15.56 per cent profit drop in the second fiscal quarter, as the company continued to struggle to turn around the IBM business it bought two years ago.
Net profit fell to US$38 million for the quarter ended September from US$45 million a year ago, lower than the estimate of US$40 million in a Bloomberg survey of six analysts. Sales edged up 1.29 per cent to US$3.7 billion.
Lenovo made an US$83 million profit in the greater China region in the quarter, but its international business, which largely was acquired from IBM, reported a US$24 million loss.
The IBM acquisition also resulted in US$100 million in restructuring cost including lay-offs, of which the company said it has booked US$91 million so far into its accounts.
The loss and restructuring cost continue to fuel doubts about the wisdom of Lenovo's US$1.25 billion acquisition, one of the first major overseas expansions by a mainland firm.
