Abe gets it right with Beijing visit
I'm writing in response to the article 'The sun is shining again after rain' (South China Morning Post, October 9).
Diplomacy is a crucial topic in politics. If neighbouring countries develop a good relationship, their economies and peoples will benefit. Most importantly, there will be peace in the region.
In this context, newly appointed Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to Beijing, when he met President Hu Jintao , was a step in the right direction.
Mr Abe's trip marked a clear departure from previous hostility and raised hopes that both sides could be ready to forget their differences.
China had refused to invite former Japanese prime minister Junichiro Koizumi for the past five years because of his repeated visits to the Yasukuni war shrine.
Although it's too soon to judge Mr Abe's leadership skills, he has acted wisely and showed that he genuinely wants to improve relationships between the two countries.
