Some fung shui consultants advocate that toilet doors should always be closed and toilet seats and lids kept down at all times. There are several rationales behind this, one of them being that this will prevent one's wealth being flushed away. Unfortunately, this fung shui 'intervention' has also created much unnecessary tension within families when not everyone subscribes to the theory. While there is no basis for the toilet seat and lid to be down at all times in traditional fung shui teachings, keeping the toilet door closed in certain instances is recommended, but from a health, not wealth, perspective. When the toilet door is opposite or in close proximity to the front door, is clearly visible from the living or dining rooms or is adjacent to the kitchen, keeping the toilet door closed will limit the negative chi in the toilet from mixing with the energy already present in the home. For those who are concerned about poor ventilation, you may keep the toilet door slightly ajar (but not half open) or install a humidifier.

En suites are not considered fung shui problems if the toilet door does not open directly onto any portion of the bed. When it does, keep the toilet door closed when you are asleep.
