Cashing in on a growing market

CONSUMERS IN CHINA spent more than US$5 billion on cosmetics and other beauty products last year, making the nation one of the industry's fastest-growing markets.

Spending is forecast to increase by 25 per cent a year over the next five years, according to a Chinese government research project.

Cosmoprof Shanghai, to be held from January 31 to February 3 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, aims to serve this burgeoning market.

'This is a regional extension of the Cosmoprof Asia concept and is purely for the Chinese market. It's very exciting because the industry is in such a growth mode,' said Michael Duck, director of Cosmoprof Asia, organiser of the fair.

The Italian beauty and cosmetic industry will be honoured with an Italian Beauty Excellence area, with live and video presentations of the latest collections of colour, makeup and hair styles.

More than 200 exhibitors from raw materials and ingredients, contract manufacturing, packaging and machinery, point-of-purchase and merchandising supply sectors will be on hand for the inaugural fair.

Other areas represented include perfumery, cosmetics and toiletries, professional beauty and spa products and equipment, professional hair products and equipment, natural cosmetics and health products.

International exhibitors who hope to further their presence in China are from Australia, Britain, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Israel, Italy, South Korea, Spain and the US.
