Douglas Whyte riding a treble is hardly anything new, but Saturday's completion of yet another three-timer at Sha Tin held a particular significance in terms of his ultimate place in history. After a slow start by his own standards this season, Douglas Whyte's trebles at the past four meetings have redressed the balance to put him back on track for what has become his usual century-or-thereabouts for the season. And Sunny Power's victory in the ninth race took Whyte's career tally to 847, not an especially noteworthy number in itself but one that left the South African champion 99 victories short of Tony Cruz's all-time total. Whyte is cutting back that deficit at a rapid enough rate to expect he will end this term having taken his total past 900 and perhaps within 20 or 30 of Cruz's monumental 946-win tally. And with his sense of timing, it would be no surprise if Whyte reached the new record for all the world to witness around about international week 2007.
