What jewellery can you buy a man without giving him the wrong idea? Alain Evrard, director of Edward Chiu, offers the following tips for accessorising him: To say 'I want to get to know you better', don't go for anything too outrageous or too expensive. This may be off-putting, as the man may see it as a frivolous display. Something chic but not vulgar, such as cufflinks, should do the job. A ring can have two meanings: it's either the most intimate piece of jewellery a woman can give a man, or it's simply intended as a fashion statement. Usually, though, it's the former. 'With a ring, there is almost always a connotation of commitment,' Mr Evrard says. If the relationship is platonic, choose a simple stud that the man can wear on his tie or jacket. This can ooze international style, sending a message that you value that person. Or for younger men, a pair of bracelets is very trendy - but you need to have charisma to wear them well. A luxury brand watch says 'you deserve it'. It can also be the ultimate sign of respect, making an ideal choice if buying for, say, one's father, or to mark a special occasion. Otherwise a simple pendant, in beautiful materials such as black and white jade, is a perfect choice.
