Another alternative to the accommodation mentioned above is the new Indigo Pearl Resort in Phuket. The popular holiday destination was once renowned for tin mining but is now better known for its beaches. That part of the island's history is the inspiration behind the new luxury resort, which opens in Phuket next month.
Indigo Pearl aims to restore the historic balance and 'attract discerning travellers seeking a distinctive cultural experience'. The US$21-million project combines post-modern architecture and Thai tradition. Old hard wood and steel plate buildings provided inspiration for parts of the design, and the tin-mining theme runs through to the smallest details, from restaurant names to staff uniforms.
General manager Anthony Ross (formerly of The Sentosa Resort and Spa in Singapore), said the concept targeted affluent travellers seeking cultural and local experiences.
'It is a different and distinctive experience for a polished and urbane clientele, and we believe it will help attract a new demographic of visitors seeking distinctive holiday experiences that reflect their sense of style and creativity.'
The resort is set among lagoons and jungle and includes facilities one might expect of a luxury property - swimming pools, tennis courts, a children's club and high-speed wireless internet links, plus a cooking school, scuba-diving centre and a snooker hall. Soft opening rates are US$188 from December 1 to 21; and US$212 between January 11 and the end of March. Rates include breakfast and airport transfers.
