In two years, I shall finish my secondary school education. My parents want me to attend a university in either the United States or Australia. Frankly I don't want to go. I prefer to stay here because most of my friends will be studying here. I know my parents think my English will improve if I study at a western university. I don't think there will be any other advantages. How can I convince my parents that I should stay here?

Education consultant Florence Robertson responds:

Many students would welcome the opportunity to study abroad but I understand your feelings about leaving your friends, family and culture.

Before you try to convince your parents, think carefully about the opportunity they are giving you, and weigh it against what you think you can gain by remaining here.

The latest SCMP/TNS Opinion Leaders Survey published this month indicates that Hong Kong graduates returning from abroad are more highly regarded than those who study locally, particularly for their greater independence and language skills, and strengths in areas such as critical thinking.

However, Hong Kong's universities are doing much to upgrade students' international experiences that your parents may not be aware of. This includes new opportunities to spend time abroad, in exchanges, summer programmes or immersion projects, lasting anything from a few weeks to a whole year.
