CUHK was established in 1963 and its Graduate School founded three years later. It is a bilingual institution. By September this year, CUHK had more than 10,000 undergraduates and 9,000 full and part-time postgraduates. From 2001-02 to 2005-06, the number of postgraduate research postgraduate students remained steady, rising from 1,608 to 1,777. However, taught postgraduate students jumped from 4,033 in 2001-02 to 7,192 in 2005-06, an increase of about 78 per cent. The Graduate School offers a wide range of research and taught postgraduate degrees up to doctoral level. Large programmes include its MBA and teacher-training, with taught master's programmes in professional and less work-specific subjects. New programmes due to be offered in 2007-08: MSSc in sustainable tourism and postgraduate diploma in cultural anthropology (both subject to approval).
