Hong Kong's police force will continue to offer financial assistance to a paralysed constable as long as the medical treatment is reasonable and effective, the police commissioner said yesterday.
Dick Lee Ming-kwai said paralysed Jacky Chu Chun-kwok, who has been in a near-vegetative state caused by blood loss since being stabbed while on patrol last year in Cheung Sha Wan, had shown improvement since he saw him two months ago.
'There are improvements. He seems to be more relaxed and his eyes are more lively, but of course it will take a long period for full recovery,' he said.
Mr Lee, who was on an official trip to the mainland, took a 15-minute detour yesterday to visit Mr Chu at the Guangzhou Military District Main Hospital, where the policeman has received oxygen pressure treatment, acupuncture, massage and a mixture of Chinese and western medicines.
Mr Chu's mother, Lee Lai-hing, welcomed the force's decision to grant him a further HK$140,000, enough to cover his medical bill for two months.
She hopes the financial assistance will go on.
