Huawei wins network contract for Versatel Huawei Technologies, China's largest telecommunications equipment maker, has won its first contract in Germany with network operator Versatel Deutscheland. The mainland company will supply for an undisclosed amount its line of Wavelength Division Multiplexing products and high-end routers to help build an internet protocol network for Versatel, Germany's third-largest fixed network operator. Huawei has been expanding its operations outside China since 1996. It had US$4.8 billion in international sales last year, the first time this segment exceeded domestic sales. Bien Perez China Southern e-ticket programme a success China Southern Airlines, the first mainland carrier to sell air tickets via the internet, has recorded 10.4 billion yuan of electronic ticket sales in the first nine months this year. The carrier, China's largest in terms of aircraft fleet and passengers flown, estimated it now controls more than 32 per cent of e-ticket sales volume in the Chinese aviation industry. The company sold more than four billion yuan of e-tickets between March 28, 2000, when the programme was launched, and March last year. ?Bien Perez China Mobile adds record number of subscribers China Mobile, the world's largest mobile phone operator by users, added a record number of subscribers last month after the company cut rates and competition eased. China Mobile said it gained 4.59 million users last month, bringing its subscriber numbers to 291.7 million. Of the new additions, 301,000 were contract users and 4.29 million prepaid customers, the company said in a statement on its website yesterday. ?Bloomberg Mcafee appoints HK and Taiwan regional head United States anti-virus software firm McAfee has appointed Leo Chan as regional manager for Hong Kong and Taiwan. Mr Chan will be responsible for sales in the two markets and report directly to Tony Ho Chung-keung, McAfee's vice-president for North Asia. He joined McAfee from JP Morgan Chase five years ago. He previously served as McAfee's chief security adviser in Asia-Pacific. ?Bien Perez Yahoo, newspaper groups share online advertising Yahoo will work with seven United States newspaper groups to share online advertising in a deal that could help newspapers tap into the lucrative online ad market. A total of 176 newspapers in 38 states will take part in the deal, according to the websites of The New York Times and some of the newspapers involved. The groups that have signed on include Cox Newspapers, Belo Corp, Hearst Corp, E.W. Scripps, MediaNews Group, Lee Enterprises and the Journal Register. The partnership will start next month with Yahoo's HotJobs service and move to other types of online advertising.?AP
