Con artists swindle woman out of HK$1m in 'good luck' ritual
Updated at 2.54pm: A vegetable seller was duped out of HK$1 million in cash, along with gold ornaments, by three women who told her she needed their help to rid her family of bad luck.
The 46-year-old woman, surnamed Wong, finally realised it was a scam and called police on Monday when she found that a bag returned by the three did not contain the cash and jewellery she had put in as offerings, Apple Daily reported.
Ms Wong, a vegetable seller at a Sha Tin market, encountered the fraudsters outside a fast-food shop in the City One Sha Tin estate on Monday at about 1pm.
The three told the woman they had a 'magic mirror' which showed something negative was happening to her family, the newspaper reported.
They claimed they could perform a 'ceremony' to rid her family of bad luck. They said this would require money and valuables as offerings, which would be returned afterwards.
Ms Wong, whose 10-year-old child was sick at home, agreed. She went to a bank near her home in Kwong Yuen Estate to withdraw HK$1 million cash and some gold ornaments, the Apple Daily reported.
